Bathurst is Ben's Everest

Mount Panorama Bathurst may well be the Mt. Everest of Ben McCashney’s racing career.
The determined youngster from the tiny hamlet of Kyneton in Victoria is mounting a serious challenge, realising a lifelong dream and racing his V8 Supercar at Bathurst in October, but it’s uphill geographically and financially.

“It’s a big job ahead of us,” says Team Manager Ged Stokes, “but we’re working every day on securing new supporters to get us there. It’s not a cheap exercise, but we knew that going in.”
The team is backed by some high profile companies and products, and a swag of smaller supporters who are no less enthusiastic about assisting in Ben’s ambition to ‘climb the mountain’ in October.
“Since we started up the concept where people can support us by signing our boot lid and contributing $150. There’s been some amazing support for that and we hope to continue accruing names and funds as we lead up to Bathurst.”

A recent event in the team’s hometown has everyone’s spirits buoyed.
“We held an event two weeks ago in Kyneton at Splashaway Pool and Spa shop with the boot lid and got about 35 signatures on it which is good, the criteria was for donations over $150 you got to sign your name on the lid. Following the success of this event we will be taking the boot lid or possibly the car on a bit of a tour to some regional areas where we have a lot of contacts like Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong,” says McCashney, “there are heaps of people out on the ground level who are trying to help us out which is awesome. We really appreciate it.”

McCashney is the first to admit that whole project of racing V8 Supercars has been ambitious to say the least.
“When you talk about people belting above their weight that's definitely us, we are not fortunate enough to have huge personal fortunes but we do have something in spades and that is passion, spirit and emotion to help get us to the top. We’re confident that our determination and our will to succeed is going to help us get there.”
Bathurst presents a range of financial challenges, one of which is accommodation.

“We love camping,” says Stokes, “so that’s what we’ll be doing at Bathurst. I doubt if there’s been too many other V8 Supercar teams that have camped in tents when they’ve raced at Mt. Panorama but we certainly will be. We’re no different to any other punters at Bathurst, except that we’re entering our team there to race. I’m sure we’ll meet some tremendous people in the campgrounds and we might even score some more autographs for the boot lid.”
So there’s one for the Bathurst statistician’s, has a V8 Supercar team ever camped at the mountain in the modern era?
