Promising Start for McCashney
Round 3 of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar development series saw the debut of Ben McCashney racing running a Paul Morris VZ Commodore. The inclusion of many drivers and teams from the main series provided possibly the strongest field ever in the development series.
Despite the strength of the field and not having raced since Bathurst in October Ben acquitted himself well recording the 7th fastest time in practice 1 and 11th in practice 2.
New tyres were fitted for qualifying and unfortunately the balance of the car was lost. Ben could only manage 16th fastest time. Race 1 saw Ben move through the field to finish in 9th place and obtain a front row start in race 2.
An overheated clutch in race 2 made getting off the line difficult and Ben was forced off the race line in turn 1. A bump in the track bent the steering significantly and Ben lost almost all of the right hand lock and had massive understeer. He pushed on with a view to finish and gain some points but was unable to battle for positions as he would normally do.
Race three was a fight to the end with battles with the Russell brothers for most of the 20 laps. Eventually finishing in 9th place. A great effort in his first race meeting for his own team. The team can be proud of the performance especially considering the awesome field assembled, featuring a large number of very new cars. The team is now focused on the next round at Townsville in July.
The team wishes to thank the following people for their continued assistance Playstation, Vereker Bros Smash Repairs, PJ Transport and Logistics, Tyquin Earthmoving, Rick Egan, ZMM, MCRB, AML risk management, Albins Offroad and M&W engine services for their support.
Ben also extends his thanks to all of the locals who have supported his career.
